Relationship between comments?
Most of the users follow the same joke as the original posts “I wish my boyfriend look at me the way Leo looks at his cookies” and start with “I wish”. This similar pattern shows the relationship between the comments and the original post, which can create resonance for those who are attracted by the original caption.
These examples show this community welcome people to make fun of themselves to entertain other users. Last but not least, users always condemn others to use the pun for being in top comments. We think that they just want to stand out in the community. One user slam them for just wishing to be in top comments “I don’t know why people are trying their best to be on the Top Comments. I mean look at me! I just copy & paste”, while one is very random “Everyone going on about how they want someone to look at them the way Leo looks at his cookies. Me personally, I wanna know what kind of cookie he is eating.” Participants are brave to voice out their own opinions and create their own unique image to attract more attention from others. |
However, there are no distinctive similarity between the comments here. ‘That's why the world is ending’ and ‘the biggest part of my pyramid would be anime’ are the two highest like comments. These two comments do not relate to the 1st comment except they are all referring to the original post.
Even though the participants all intended to make jokes, they make jokes in rather different perspectives. For the 1st comment, it is making fun on the phenomenon that the 9gag post is suggesting; for the 2nd comment,’That's why the world is ending’, we could consider it as a direct comment on the original post; for the other comment, they are the personal experience of the participants. Since the ideology of 9gag is to entertain the participants and other people, the way of commenting the post is not that strict and variety of comments could be seen. |
However, it is interesting to note that there is a comment stating different views from the public but it is highly related to the top comments. This comment is entirely irrelevant to the posts but criticising the people who always copy and paste the texts directly. ‘You guys with your overused jokes, what the hell is wrong with you? Under every post there is a copied john cena “joke”, same with “im blabla and i find this offensive” seriously guys, get your own brain and stop being boring as hell?” Obviously this person hates the repetitive comments so much and he is acting against the public. This shows that this person may want to seek extra attention upon the comment issue and he wants to set himself apart from others, so as to prospectively earn more ‘likes’.

The top comment for this post of 9GAG is very short, which is written only in one sentence. It is not a complete sentence, and the facebook user solely used symbols and words to explain the jokes ‘Kindergarten = Children's garden *mindblown*’ to avoid others’ misunderstanding. It is a very casual text typed seven minutes after the post appeared. This comment is very popular, and that shows that most of the people do not really know what ‘Kinder’ means in German so this comment somehow blows their mind.
Other comments onwards are mostly related to this joke and suggesting relatively the same thing as the top comment. They were basically making jokes with the word ‘Kinder’. Some suggested human becomes cannibals as they eat kinder chocolate. While some said sunflower oil is made of sunflower, so they expected us to deduce that kinder chocolate is made of children. Almost all of the comments are cracking jokes based on the joke from the post. Judging from the comments of the post, funny comments tend to attain more ‘likes’ and be more popular. |
